Saw a preview screening of Michel Gondry's latest, BE KIND REWIND.
It's not his greatest film but it's fun and endearing mostly.
I thought it was interesting that during the Q+A, Gondry mentions to us in the audience that he was a little worried about how Americans would react to a French man making a movie about American movies, particularly films with African American leads like Boyz in the Hood. His worry was that people would get mad that Jack Black played characters like Cuba Gooding's from Boyz in an afro wig. However, he mentions his worries were unfounded as the feedback from folks like the community (Passaic, NJ) they filmed in, Mos Def, and Dave Chappelle (who actually suggested the movie in the first place) were all positive.
I got to thinking last night, though - while I found Jack Black as Jackie Chan (with scotch tape on his lids) totally hilarious, some folks in the Asian community might not. Like AsianWeek op-ed piece angry, you know?
